The Fishing is in summer mode meaning fish feeding early and late due to the heat. I have been starting my snook fishing trips at 7 after I have gone off shore to net bait for the day. The fishing in Naples bay continues to be better than venturing into the far backwaters. Not to say I don’t visit some of my honey holes on the better tides for shots at Mr. Redfish. Swimming along the snook in the bay have been rather large Mangrove Snappers that make for some excellent eats.
The state is still keeping the Snook season closed until September; I personal feel that they should keep it close until next spring giving them a chance to have good spawn. Tarpon are out on the beach just a few hundred yards from shore. The tarpon trips are starting a little earlier (5:30) so we can get into position before the sun rises. The night fishing has been spectacular with both snook and baby tarpon being very active under the lights. I have been using live bait on most trips however some nights the artificial lure fishing has been doing better than the live herring.
Captain Dave has been running ¾ and full day trips out to deeper water in the gulf with great success. The grouper and snapper bites have been good especially over good hard bottoms of coral reefs.
On the upper part of the water column we have been floating crabs for some real beastly Permits…
